Dick Proenneke’s Cabin
For about 30 years, Dick Proenneke lived in a log cabin without electricity and his only neighbors were the wildlife that called Twin Lakes, Alaska, their home. The solitude did not leave Dick pondering how to fill his days, as he kept busy hiking, exploring, and fishing and hunting for his food.
Not only did he build the entire cabin using hand tools—most of which he crafted himself—Dick also fashioned by hand just about everything in the cabin, from pots and pans to a desk and chairs. Dick lived off the land and only rarely did he have supplies and food flown in to his remote oasis.
Dick started building his cabin when he was 50. He wasn’t afraid to dream and to follow his own path. Dick Proenneke is remembered as a legendary naturalist who admired, respected, and cared for creation and its natural beauty and wonder.
