Feeding Famine Victims
It’s been nearly six years since a famine has been declared anywhere in the world, but in February 2017 famine was officially confirmed in two regions of South Sudan, the world’s youngest nation.
The government of South Sudan and the United Nations jointly announced that 100,000 people in Unity State presently face starvation, with one million more on the brink of famine.
Violence and insecurity in the country have led to a rapidly deteriorating economy and have made it nearly impossible for civilians to plant and harvest crops.
Samaritan’s Purse oversees monthly food distributions for refugees and local communities in partnership with the World Food Programme. More than 400,000 people throughout the country receive basic food items including sorghum, cooking oil, peas, and salt. These rations can feed a refugee family for up to one month.
