Cholera in Haiti
The eerie glow of light cast by the ubiquitous blue tarps matched the startling presence of cholera. If patients arrived at the cholera treatment center in shock and on the verge of collapse, it was equally startling to see them quickly rebound once given a few liters of intravenous solution.
Having never been exposed to the virulent bacteria which could kill within several hours from extreme dehydration, Haitians were poorly equipped to deal with the raging outbreak which erupted in November 2010. Providing treatment and education, as well as water sanitation and hygiene support, Samaritan’s Purse treated hundreds of patients with the vast majority returning home in good health.
